George Mitchell (pictured, d. 2013) helped develop the hydraulic fracturing technique for unearthing natural gas shale, which led to more energy fortunes. He was the first to develop the Barnett shale field in Texas, which he later sold to Devon Energy in 2002 for $3.5 billion. During a so-called retirement, Mitchell turned to real estate and bought Bald Head Island in North Carolina along with hotels in Galveston. In Houston, though, he is probably best known for creating the Woodlands.

Texas has 34 billionaires on Forbes wealthiest 400 list

Back to Gallery

Walmart heir Alice Walton of Fort Worth tops the Forbes’ list of Texans with an estimated net worth of $38.2 billion, ranking as the 13th richest American.

A change in methodology by the magazine eliminated H-E-B Chairman and CEO Charles Butt from the ranking. The magazine now counts Butt’s money as part of a family fortune that rivals the Rockefellers at $11 billion.

The Butt family last year ranked as the 23rd richest family in the country, equal to the Rockefeller family in New York.

The richest American in 2017 is former Microsoft chairman Bill Gates with an estimated wealth of $81 billion.

According to Forbes Magazine, President Donald Trump’s net worth fell $600 million over the past year, to $3.1 billion. This puts the President 92 spots lower on the list of America’s wealthiest than he was in 2016. Forbes wrote that Trump was “the most notable loser” on its list of the 400 wealthiest Americans, attributing the drop to an expensive lawsuit, the costs of his presidential campaign, and a decline in the value of his Manhattan real estate. And even though Forbes’ findings may not please the President’s supporters, Bloomberg was far less generous in its estimation of the Real Estate Mogul’s net worth, estimating his wealth at an even lower $2.86 billion for 2016.

Amazon chief Jeff Bezos is the second-richest at $67 billion. No. 3 is Berkshire Hathaway investor Warren Buffett at $65.5 billion.

Michael Dell, Dell Technologies chairman and CEO, of Austin is Texas’ second-wealthiest person with a net worth of $23.2 billion, placing him at No. 19 in the country.

Among other widely known rich Texans, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones of Dallas at $5.6 billion is the fifth richest Texan and No. 95 in the country.

Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks basketball team and an investor on the television show, “Shark Tank,” has an estimated wealth of $3.3 billion, making him tied as the 21st richest Texan and ranked as tied at No. 226 in the country.

Computer services and real estate magnate H. Ross Perot of Dallas, a former presidential candidate, has an estimated wealth of $4.1 billion, good enough for No. 15 in the state and No. 167 in the nation. His son, H. Ross Perot Jr., also of Dallas, has a fortune of $2.1 billion, ranking No. 34 in Texas and No. 374 in the country.

It took a fortune of at least $2 billion to make Forbes’ 2017 list of 400 richest Americans.

The nation has another 169 billionaires who did not make the list. Among those are four San Antonio billionaires, according to Forbes’ list of 2017 billionaires released in March.

They are Silver Ventures owner Christopher “Kit” Goldsbury and investor B.J. “Red” McCombs, who turns 90 on Thursday. Goldsbury and McCombs in March each had an estimated net worth of $1.6 billion.

Also, oil and gas driller Rodney Lewis had a net worth in March of $1.5 billion. James Leininger, founder of Kinetic Concepts Inc. that is now owner by Apax Partners, had a fortune of $1.3 million.

Tom Benson of New Orleans is ranked at No. 228 on Forbes’ 2017 list of 400 wealthiest Americans with a net worth of $2.8 billion. Benson built some of his wealth in San Antonio with car dealerships and banking before moving to New Orleans in the 1980s after buying the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. He also owns the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans. Benson is Louisiana’s only person on the 400 list.

The 400 together have a massed wealth of $2.7 trillion, up from $2.4 billion last year, according to the magazine.
